Loose enough to slide past the knuckle, snug enough that it does not spin. Getting there reliably is a question of measuring once, carefully — and knowing which of the world’s several sizing systems your number belongs to.

This guide covers three methods of measurement, the conversion across the EU, US, UK, and Japanese systems, the small details that affect fit, and what to do if the size is not perfect when the ring arrives. Every Keefirivunts ring is made one at a time after the order is placed, so the size is always made specifically for you.

Three ways to measure

Listed from most to least accurate. If you have access to a ring that already fits, method one is by far the most reliable.

1. Measure a ring that already fits

Take a ring that fits comfortably on the intended finger. Measure the inside diameter in millimetres using a ruler or, ideally, digital calipers. Measure the inner circle at its widest point — not the outer edge of the band, and not across the stone setting.

If you do not have calipers, place the ring on a sheet of paper and trace the inside circle with a sharp pencil. Measure the diameter of the traced circle to the nearest 0.5 mm. With a steady hand, this method is accurate to within roughly half a size.

Then find your diameter in the table below. Each Keefirivunts size shows both the EU number and the corresponding mm diameter, so you can match either way.

2. Measure with a paper strip

If you do not have a reference ring, the next most reliable approach is to measure your finger directly. Cut a thin strip of paper about 80 mm long and 5 mm wide. Wrap it around the base of the finger, snug but not tight. Mark where the strip overlaps with a pen. Lay the strip flat and measure the length in millimetres from the start to the mark — this is the inner circumference. Find that number in the EU column of the conversion table.

Two notes on accuracy: keep the strip flat, not twisted; and measure twice at slightly different times of day, then average the result. Fingers are slightly smaller in the morning and slightly larger in the evening.

3. Visit a jeweller

If you are near a goldsmith or jewellery shop, ask to be measured with a professional ring sizer — the metal-band tool with calibrated sizes. The reading is exact and takes thirty seconds. Bring the EU number home and order from there.

If you need a Keefirivunts sizer
Send a request through the contact form and a paper sizing strip will be posted to your address at no cost. The strip is calibrated to the EU and mm systems used on this site. Allow three to five working days within the EU.

Conversion table

EU sizes are the inner circumference of the ring in millimetres. Diameter is the straight measurement across the inside. US sizes are numeric. UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand share the same lettered system. Japan uses its own numeric scale. The table below lists every Keefirivunts size.

EU

Diameter

US

UK / AU

Japan

44

14.0 mm

3

F½

—

46

14.5 mm

3½

G½

6

47

15.0 mm

4

H½

7

49

15.5 mm

5

J

9

50

16.0 mm

5¼

J½

10

52

16.5 mm

6

L

12

53

17.0 mm

6¼

L½

13

55

17.5 mm

7

N

14

57

18.0 mm

7¾

O½

16

58

18.5 mm

8

P

17

60

19.0 mm

9

R

19

61

19.5 mm

9½

S

20

63

20.0 mm

10¼

T½

22

64

20.5 mm

10¾

U½

23

66

21.0 mm

11½

W

25

68

21.5 mm

12

X

27

69

22.0 mm

12¼

Y

28

71

22.5 mm

13½

Z+1

30

72

23.0 mm

14

Z+2

—

74

23.5 mm

14¾

Z+3

—

75

24.0 mm

15

Z+4

—

Conversions across systems vary slightly between published charts because the underlying systems were not designed to align. If your other-system size sits between two rows above, choose the row that matches the closer mm value.

Small things that affect fit

A reliable size depends on more than the number. Four things matter:

Knuckle width — Many people have a knuckle that is wider than the base of the finger. The ring must pass over the knuckle to be worn at all. If the knuckle is noticeably wider, size to the knuckle, not the base — the ring will be slightly looser at rest but will not get stuck.

Time of day — Fingers are smaller in the morning and slightly larger by evening. For the most reliable result, measure twice — once mid-morning, once early evening — and take the average.

Temperature — Cold fingers contract; warm fingers expand. Measure at a comfortable indoor temperature, not after coming in from outside or after a hot shower.

Band width — A wide band fits tighter than a narrow band at the same nominal size, because it covers more skin and bends less. If you are sizing for a band wider than about 4 mm, consider going one half-size larger than your measured size. Most Keefirivunts rings sit between 1.6 mm and 2.5 mm, so this matters less here — but it is worth knowing.

Buying as a surprise

If you are choosing a ring for someone else without their knowledge, the goal is to land within half a size of correct. Three approaches, in order of reliability:

Borrow a ring they already wear

If there is a ring worn on the intended finger — or at least on the same hand — measure it using the methods above. Trace the inside on paper if you cannot leave with the ring; even a careful pencil tracing produces a result accurate within half a size. The closer the borrowed ring is to the intended finger, the better.

Ask someone close — gently

A friend, sibling, or parent who shops with the person can find out a ring size without making the purpose obvious. The conversation works best when it is unhurried and folded into a larger one — a discussion about jewellery in general, or a casual visit to a shop. A direct question to the partner is the most certain method, but obviously rules out the surprise.

Use a sensible default and plan to resize

Across thousands of Keefirivunts orders, the most common engagement-ring size sits between EU 52 and EU 55 (16.5 to 17.5 mm). If you have no way to measure and no one to ask, choosing within this range gives a high chance of a wearable fit on the day.

Even better: go slightly larger rather than slightly smaller. A ring that sits a little loose can be temporarily fitted with a clear silicone sizer worn behind the band, and resized to exact specification after the proposal. A ring that is too small cannot go on at all. The moment matters more than the perfect fit on the day.

If the size is not perfect

Two situations, two answers.

Slightly too large

A clear silicone ring guard, available at any jeweller, sits inside the band and takes up a fraction of a millimetre of space. It is invisible from the front and lets the ring be worn comfortably until resizing is done.

Needs a proper resize

Most Keefirivunts rings can be resized within two sizes up or down, depending on the design. Solitaire bands resize easily; rings with pavé stones or hidden halos along the shank are more limited. The first resize within the year after purchase is complimentary. Contact us with the order number and the new measured size, and we will guide the next step.

Still unsure?

If after reading this you are still not sure, that is normal — and we would rather take the conversation than leave you guessing. Two options:

Request a free paper sizer to be posted to you. Use the contact form on the site.

Book a consultation, online or in the Tallinn atelier, and we will work the size out together.

Either way, the size will be right before any ring is made.

A ring should sit close to the hand without effort.
