Diamond & 4C-s?
When talking about diamonds, whether lab-grown diamonds or natural diamonds, one important term that is often mentioned is “4C”. It stands for the four key elements that determine the beauty and value of a diamond. These 4Cs are carat, cut, colour and clarity. Thanks to these factors, it is possible to choose the right diamond without actually seeing the stone.
Did you know that a carat comes from the word “carob” (a carob tree), which weighs 0.2 grams or 1 carat per seed.
2. Cut: Another important C refers to the quality of the cut and shape of the diamond. The quality of the cut has a very direct effect on the diamond’s brilliance, shine and light reflection. A well-cut diamond reflects light back towards the viewer and offers maximum brilliance. The quality of the cut takes into account the proportions of the diamond, symmetry, polishing and the quality of the cut.
3. Color: Color refers to the degree of yellowing or discoloration of the diamond. The most prized diamonds are, of course, totally colorless and transparent. The color classification ranges from D (colorless) to Z (yellow or brownish). The less color a diamond has, the rarer it is and the higher its value. However, in some cases, colored diamonds, such as pink or blue diamonds, are rare and can be even more precious, rare and valuable.
4. Clarity: Clarity refers to the purity of a diamond’s internal and external surfaces. Most diamonds have small natural internal or external inclusions, flaws, spots, etc. Clarity is graded on a scale ranging from IF (internally flawless) to I3 (contains noticeable inclusions). The purer the diamond, the rarer and more valuable it is. High quality clarity ensures the diamond’s brilliance and clarity.
